Case Studies Should Explain More Than the Final Design

A strong case study shows the problem, the thinking, the decisions and the value created. It helps prospective clients evaluate capability, not only taste.

Visual outcomes matter, but a gallery of final work does not explain the quality of the thinking behind it. A useful case study reveals how the work addressed a real business need.

Begin with context

Explain the organisation, the situation and what needed to change. Keep the background focused on the information required to understand the project.

Describe the challenge accurately

The challenge should reflect the business issue, not only the design task. “Create a new logo” is a brief. “Create a more credible and coherent brand for expansion” is a strategic challenge.

Show the reasoning

Explain the important decisions, the alternatives considered and the principles that guided the solution. This demonstrates judgement and process.

Connect the output to value

Results may include improved clarity, stronger alignment, easier rollout, better client response, a more professional sales process or measurable performance.

Case study structure

  1. Context
  2. Challenge
  3. Strategic response
  4. Creative and practical solution
  5. Implementation
  6. Outcome and learning
